How it all beganThe origins of Buzzsolomoto can be traced back as far as July 1997 when Antony Beaumont (Buzz) started importing Vespa's and Lambretta's from Spain. The first few trips were glorified holidays with friends, hunting around various scrap yards all over Spain, handing over his piece of paper with the spanish translation of "hello my name is Antony,i am from England, do you have lambrettas or vespas for sale please"!! and hoping for the best. This was the only spanish he knew besides "dos cervettas por favour!" Things became more serious in febuary 2000 when Antony was made redundant, so he decided to take a chance and try to make a full time living from buying and selling scooters. Spanish lessons at night school were the next thing on the agenda which helped things a great deal. This enabled Buzz to meet the locals and find out more about Spain, the spanish people, their culture and how they like to do business.Contacts were made and before long various people in different areas of Spain were sourcing scooters that he could collect and transport back on a regular basis. The name Buzzsolomoto came about partly from Antonys nickname, Buzz. His initials are A.B. as in a bee (get it). The solomoto part is from the spanish motor magazine 'solomoto' meaning literally 'only scooters' and so Buzzsolomoto was born. Initially he was just bringing scooters back and selling them on as complete bikes. Some of the straighter ones being restored by Buzz with the help of friend John (Branny). Over time people soon started to request various bits and pieces and it wasnt long before some of the rougher scooters were getting stripped down and the parts sold seperately. The L.C.G.B. parts fairs proved a great place to sell the scooters and parts and to start establishing a name and hopefully a good reputation for value and service. At this point, Adele (buzz`s wife) was recruited for box carrying and sandwich making and so the empire began to grow. After a couple of years of trading at fairs around the country, the second hand parts were becoming increasingly hard to come by and so a small selection of new parts began to creep onto the stall. At this point the stall was getting too big for two people to manage and Adele was getting fed up of lugging heavier and heavier boxes in and out every week and so extra help was enlisted in the form of Fig,a scooter friend who had nothing better to do on a sunday and was enticed in with the offer of free beer and food! At this point the business was still being run from two sheds in the back garden at home but space was becoming an issue and the neighbours were beggining to complain. We decided that it was time to seek proper premises. This was not as easy as we had thought but we eventually found a suitable place in Halifax and in October 2007 Buzzsolomoto opened its doors for business. The past 18 months have seen us building up the business and expanding our already loyal customer base. The new shop has enabled us to open accounts with new suppliers and source quality parts from around the world, giving us an extensive range of parts for both Vespa and Lambretta. We continue to import scooters from both Spain and Italy and we are constantly trying to provide a greater variety of services for our customers. Above is the prototype Lambretta Carro or pick up that I managed to get my hands on. It was designed and made in the late eighties at the Lambretta factory In Spain. It is based around a Lynx/Jet 200 engine and has 16 gears 8 forward and 8 reverse. It does run and drive, but a lot of the parts are aesthetic and are only there to show what it would have looked like had it gone into production. It was aimed for the Cuban market initially but the Spanish Lambretta factory ran into financial trouble before they got it into production. |
